DescriptionTisdall organised a lecture tour of Ireland for Beuys while his drawings exhibition The Secret Block for a Secret Person in Irelandwas on show in Belfast and Dublin in 1974. Beuys felt a true affinity with Ireland and its people. His birthplace, Cleves, on the German-Dutch border, has historical connections to Catholicism and the Celts. Perhaps Beuys chose both the location and his specific pose for this photograph to express his awe at the artistry of both Neolithic craftsmen and the Celtic spiral.
