DescriptionElisabeth Vigée Le Brun was arguably the most important portrait painter in late eighteenthcentury France. She served atthe Royal Court of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette and received prestigious commissions at home and abroad. This print was produced after Vigée Le Brun’s Self-Portrait with her Daughter, Julie, 1789. Created at a pivotal period, during the French Revolution, the intimate double portrait captures the authentic embrace of a mother and child. Vigée Le Brun was unafraid to show herself in the roles of both mother and skilled artist.(Katie Buckley, Curatorial Fellow - Prints and Drawings, An Artist's Presence, 2025, Print Gallery)
