DescriptionThis print is based on an unfinished drawing made by David Wilkie during his travels to the Holy Land. In the Winter of 1840-1841, Wilkie stopped in Constantinople where he met and sketched an Albanian dragoman, Sotiri, who was in the service of a British diplomat, Colquhoun. During the nineteenth century, such men were essential to the success of foreign diplomatic missions in the Ottoman Empire where they acted as interpreters or official guides.Inscriptionlower left (scratched on stone): D.
