DescriptionThis print is based on an unfinished drawing made by David Wilkie during his travels to the Holy Land. In the Winter of 1840-1841, Wilkie stopped in Constantinople where he met and sketched an Albanian dragoman, Sotiri, who was in the service of a British diplomat, Colquhoun. During the nineteenth century, such men were essential to the success of foreign diplomatic missions in the Ottoman Empire where they acted as interpreters or official guides.
