DescriptionPhilip Simms was an engraver working out of Dame Street in the early eighteenth century. He made a number of engravings for the publisher George Faulkner including the frontispiece to volume II of Jonathan Swift’s Poetical Works (1744). This print is an illustration for The Universal History (1744-46), also published by Faulkner. At the time of publication, The Universal History was the largest book ever to be printed in Ireland.Inscriptionupper left: Vol. IV. over against page 145
