DescriptionThe American genre painter and etcher Howard Helmick established his reputation during a fifteen year stay in London between 1872 and 1887. He was elected a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1881. He visited Ireland regularly and these tours resulted in a series of popular paintings and etchings depicting rural life in Cork and Galway. He was friendly with Whistler and his paintings commanded high prices at the Royal Academy’s annual exhibitions.Inscriptionlower left (scratched in plate): H.Helmick
