DescriptionThe American genre painter and etcher Howard Helmick established his reputation during a fifteen year stay in London between 1872 and 1887. He was elected a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1881. He visited Ireland regularly and these tours resulted in a series of popular paintings and etchings depicting rural life in Cork and Galway. He was friendly with Whistler and his paintings commanded high prices at the Royal Academy’s annual exhibitions.
