DescriptionHayter enjoyed royal patronage and was appointed Queen Victoria’s official portrait and history painter in 1837. He was considered by many to be vain and self-important. On meeting Hayter, John Constable found him to be "a very prosperous, disagreeable personage—but a great man in his own opinion". Here he depicts himself as a dandy much concerned with his appearance.Inscriptionlower left (scratched in plate): GHayter Se Ipsum Pinxit [GH in monogram]/1822 et Aqua Fortis Fecit 1824
