DescriptionJonathan Richardson was a successful portrait painter and influential collector of old master drawings. He wrote extensively on art and was widely read during his own lifetime. Towards the end of his life, Richardson made a series of self-portraits depicting himself in a wig or turban or with closely-cropped hair. In this informal portrait Richardson portrays himself as an intellectual of the Enlightenment.
