DescriptionHeemskerck produced designs for roughly 600 engravings many of which dealt with religious subjects. Religious upheaval in the Netherlands in the sixteenth century caused artists to market their prints to a wide audience regardless of their affiliation. Dutch biblical prints of this period strictly adhered to Scripture and were kept free of potentially contentious imagery in order to appeal to Protestants and Catholics alike.
