DescriptionHogarth’s satirical print echoes the drinking scenes painted by Jan Steen in the previous century. Although less didactic than his famous ‘Gin Lane’ print, Hogarth’s aim here is the same: to illustrate the folly of overindulging in alcohol. Well to do men in various stages of drunkenness are shown wigs askew, staggering or snoozing around a table while the punch flows freely.
