DescriptionThis portrait study executed from life depicts an elderly woman whose careworn features, highlighted with touches of white chalk, are sensitively realised. The artist captures the dignified countenance of the sitter, who stares pensively out at the viewer. Powers Court was an impoverished area located between the grand Georgian houses of Upper and Lower Mount Street, mostly inhabited by servants from the big houses. It was a short distance from the artist’s home in Mespil House.
