DescriptionThe Irish artist John Doyle worked as a political caricaturist in London from about 1827. His lithographed caricatures signed 'HB' were so successful that from 1829 he began to issue them as a numbered series, which continued for 22 years. His method was to transpose a current political event into the context of a well known literary or artistic event and many of his caricatures are littered with allusions to classical literature, the Bible and Shakespeare. This satirical print depicts Daniel O'Connell (his home was Derrynane House in County Kerry) conjuring up supporters for his anti-union agitation.
