DescriptionJohn Maguire was a Catholic merchant, whose eldest son, John Francis Maguire (1815-1872) established the nationalist Cork Examiner newspaper. The style of the drawing and the hair and costume of the sitter suggests that it was executed in the late 1820s, probably before Maclise left for London in the summer of 1827. The young artist's ability to capture a likeness was noticed by fellow Corkonian Willian McGinn, the editor of Fraser's Magazine. From 1830 McGinn employed Maclise to provide portrait illustrations for the popular London journal.Inscription(lower left) John Maguire
