DescriptionDramatically lit, this etched portrait of Henry Gurdon Marquand, the New York philanthropist and collector, shows him in his home on Madison Avenue. Zorn, a highprofile Swedish portraitist, had just arrived in America as commissioner for the Swedish art section of the Chicago World Fair. Richly inked, this etching, like all of Zorn’s works, was carefully composed and, despite appearances to the contrary, was worked on at length. Zorn always strove to produce a feeling of spontaneity, a sense that he had captured the sitter in a single moment, mid conversation perhaps.
