DescriptionThe artist, holding a cigarette in one hand and a book in the other, invites the viewer into his private world. In 1945, Dillon’s sister Molly acquired a house at 102 Abbey Road, North West London. He moved in and converted the basement into a flat. He was to live and paint here intermittently for the next twenty years. The flattened linear perspective, high viewpoint, vivid palette and intimate nature of this scene are typical features of Dillon’s early work.
