DescriptionThe Swiss landscape served as a powerful stimulus for Turner's imagination. Turner's concern in these later watercolours is to register subtle gradations of light, by way of delicate washes and minute weaves of hatched and stippled colour. Here, tinted ephemeral mists descend from the mountains down to the glacial waters, evoking an overall sense of peace and distilled calm.
