DescriptionInformal studies like this were intended for private reference, an essential aspect of the artist's working process. They also provided the stimulus for creating more detailed and complete work. The traditional identification of this watercolour as a Lake Lucerne subject has been questioned recently. It is closer in style to studies Turner made at Margate or on the Channel coast in the 1840s.
