DescriptionIn 1836 Turner toured Europe with his patron H.A.J Munro of Novar (1797-1864), a wealthy Scottish landowner and collector. In a letter to Ruskin dated 1857, Munro remembered how the Alpine landscape inspired Turner to turn to colour. 'All along whenever he could get a few minutes, he had his liltte sketch book out [...] I don't remember colours coming out till we got into Switzerland.'InscriptionWatermark: B E & S/1827
