DescriptionTurner probably copied this drawing from a sketch by John Robert Cozens (1752-97). In 1782 Cozens travelled through Italy with his patron William Beckford. He produced hundreds of landscape sketches on this tour, using a limited palette of greys and pale blues. Cozens' sketchbooks, now in the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, include a similar view of the waterfall on the Velino river in Umbria.
