DescriptionDover offered Turner the opportunity to observe the minutiae of maritime life at first hand . In 1802, he boarded a ferry at Dover bound for Calais on the first of his many Continental trips. Turner's use of colour washes in blue and grey evoke the delicate nuances of atmospheric light. The seamen's jackets, hung out scarecrow fashion on the mizzen to dry, are a typical Turnerian motif.
