DescriptionNetley Abbey was an important Cistercian foundation before it was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1536. It then became a private house until abandoned by its owners at the beginning of the eighteenth century. By the time Turner made this simple study the abbey had long been in ruins and its picturesque beauty had inspired a generation of writers and artists.
