Label TextFor this picture Thomas Sautelle Roberts, younger brother of landscapist Thomas Roberts, used a heavily laden brush. This enhances the movement within the composition, particularly that of the water cascading over the rocks in the foreground, and affords the scene, with its cold, lichen-covered rocks and gnarled trees, a notably textural quality. The sketchiness of technique, apparent randomness of composition and pronounced movement within the composition creates a more Romantic atmosphere than the classical, Arcadian scenes popular in Britain and Ireland just a generation earlier.
