Label TextFather Mathew, a popular Capuchin priest, spearheaded a campaign to promote temperance among the Catholic population throughout Ireland that proved remarkably successful. This bust, which represents Fr Mathew as a robust figure, is an excellent example of the Neo-classical style in which Hogan excelled. Heavily stylised detailing, such as the hair, calls to mind antique Roman figurative sculpture.
