Label TextThe identity of this solemn young woman is unknown, but the cross she wears prominently suggests that she, like many of Hogan’s sitters, was Catholic. It has been proposed that she was the patroness of a religious order. The bust was probably executed in Italy, where Hogan had settled in the 1820s. It is a good example of his severe Neo-classical style, though relatively unusual within his oeuvre in being a portrait of a woman.
