DescriptionEdward Nugent Leeson, 6th Earl of Milltown, was educated at Trinity College, Dublin. He was a Representative Peer, Lord Lieutenant of Co. Wicklow and a Barrister-at-law. In October 1871 he married Lady Geraldine Evelyn Stanhope, youngest daughter and heir of the 5th Earl of Harrington. After his death, his widow presented pictures, prints, works of art and antique furniture from their home at Russborough, Co. Wicklow, to the NGI in memory of her husband. Hamo Thornycroft, whose principal works include a number of significant and prominent public monuments, was the son of two sculptors. This bust of the earl demonstrates that Thornycroft was as comfortable producing smaller, domestic sculpture as he was working on large-scale projects.
