Label TextCatherine Andras was a self-trained wax modeller from Bristol. She was adopted, in her early twenties, by the miniaturist Robert Bowyer and his wife, whose only daughter had died. Andras often made wax portraits of Bowyer's sitters and excelled in the medium. She regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, and was appointed Modeller in Wax to Queen Charlotte in 1802. This delicate portrait, in a custom-built box, portrays Mrs Rose Bruce in old age. Originally from Co. Derry, Bruce was widowed at a young age. Her husband was a Presbyterian minister based in Dublin.
