Label TextSon of a Duke of Lorraine, this man was Bishop of Metz and Verdun and, briefly, regent of Lorraine. Due to its fractious politics, he resigned from the church in 1548, becoming Comte de Vaudémont and was created Duc de Mercoeur in 1569. He is depicted as a military figure, in antique-style breastplate with lions’ heads, while wearing a contemporary ruff. The sculptor initially worked for the Duke of Savoy and was in Paris by 1571. He is known for funerary monuments and busts in marble and bronze.
