Label TextThis is typical of Romney’s early portrait style. The intention is to give a noble and dignified air. The choker of pearls around the unknown woman’s neck sets off the classical profile of her face, the skin tone near white, as was fashionable at the time. Her yellow wrap dress and blue cummerbund, under a fur-lined overdress, contribute to a statuesque appearance. This is enhanced by placing her with a draped plinth and garden urn, against an impressive column base. A small range of bright colours further enhances the sense of timelessness.
