DescriptionThe Irish artist Frederic William Burton spent most of his career in London. On his first visit to Germany in 1842, he made numerous sketches of peasant costume. While the graceful attitude of the girl in this study seems natural, Burton more than likely would have drawn from a posed model. This is a preparatory drawing for the watercolour 'Peasants of Upper Franconia waiting for confession' (NGI 2394), which is itself a study for a finished watercolour, Burton's first exhibit at the Old Water-Colour Society in 1855.
