DescriptionWilliam Craig was educated at the Dublin Society's Schools and began exhibiting picturesque views at the Royal Hibernian Academy from the age of eighteen. He emigrated to the United States in 1863 and three years later became a founding member of the American Society of Painters in Watercolour. This typical example of Craig's early work displays his assured handling of watercolour. Taken from a vantage point above Rathfarnham, Craig captures the sweeping panorama of the city and environs on a warm summer evening. The composition guides the viewer from the vivid detail in the foreground down across the sloping fields into the soft blue distance where the city skyline is faintly visible in the hazy shimmering light.
