DescriptionThis panoramic view of Antwerp records the skyline in detail and includes not only the great civic and religious buildings but also commercial structures such as a windmill. Antwerp's prosperity derived from its strategically positioned harbour on the banks of the river Scheldt and the artist has given water traffic prominence in this composition. Though the authorship of the sheet is uncertain, the topographical subject and incidental detail are reminiscent of Jan Brueghel the Elder.ProvenanceAcquired, c.1882 Exhibition HistoryMaster European Drawings From the Collection of the National Gallery of Ireland, Ackland Art Museum, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; Colorado Springs Fine Arts Centre, Colorado; Art Gallery, University of Maryland, College Park; Milwaukee Art Museum, Wisconsin; Pierpont Morgan Library, New York; Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indiana; The Minneapolis Museum of Art, Minnesota; The Santa Barbara Museum of Art, California; National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin, 1983
