DescriptionThe costume, and in particular the tall hat (capotain) worn by the men, gives this drawing the appearance of a 17th century genre scene. In fact it is an 18th century copy after a 17th century composition, possibly a late drawing by Willem Pietersz Buytewech (1591/1592 -1624). The drawing gives a sense of overwhelming cold. Every figure is well wrapped up against the bitter weather, except the driver of the sled who stands bareheaded and a small baby who peeks out from under his mother's shawl.
