Label TextA curious dog gazes longingly at the dead game hanging from a hook in this still life. It is one of a pair of still life paintings, by French artist Desportes, in the Gallery’s collection. Desportes trained in Paris in the Flemish realist tradition of animal painting. At the height of his career, from 1700, he worked on numerous royal commissions for Louis XIV and Louis XV, painting hunting scenes as well as portraits of the royal hounds.
