Label TextAllan was one of several Irish artists to attend the Académie Royale des Beaux Arts in Antwerp. This painting provides evidence of his training there, but the earthy colour range also invites comparison with the work of The Hague School, which exercised a profound influence over artists throughout Europe in the latter decades of the nineteenth century. The assortment of items may be some of the artist’s studio props. Many artists collected items of this kind with a view to incorporating them into finished paintings.
