DescriptionBorn in Dublin in 1849, Stephen Cattersn Smith Jr. was the eldest son of the prominent Irish portrait painter Stephen Catterson Smith, PRHA and Anne Wyke, herself an artist who exhibited occasionally at the RHA.Upon his father’s death in 1872, he inherited Catterson Smith Senior's flourishing portrait business and thenceforth showed over 150 portraits, painting the great and the good of Irish society, at the annual RHA exhibitions. He also painted regularly in Scotland and exhibited both Scottish and Irish landscapes regularly at the Academy. He died on November 24th 1912, at his home, 42 St. Stephen's Green, in the same room in which he was born.
