Label TextDe Keyser trained as an architect and was destined to become a city mason in the service of Amsterdam, like his father and brothers. He turned his attention to painting, however, becoming one of the most sought-after portraitists of wealthy Amsterdam burghers. This charming painting is one of De Keyser’s rare genre scenes. It does not depict a romantic couple, but a young man who has just paid an up-market prostitute (a coin is visible between the fingers of her left hand). The ornate fireplace, comprising statues of Juno and Jupiter, reveals De Keyser’s interest in architecture.
