Label TextThis compelling nocturne represents Christ, his hands tied and crowned with thorns, being mocked before his crucifixion. The Latin words Ecce Homo (behold the man) were reportedly declared by the Roman prefect Pontius Pilate, seen in the background. The identity of the artist is unknown. Previously attributed to Joachim Sandrart, a well-known German follower of Caravaggio, the painting may well be by Jacques de l’Ange, an enigmatic Flemish painter whose work has only been rediscovered in recent years. His small oeuvre consists exclusively of candlelit scenes in the style of Caravaggio.
