Label TextYeats first met Samuel Beckett early in 1931, when the young writer visited him in his studio. Beckett was immediately impressed by Yeats’s work, comparing it to the poetry of T.S. Eliot. He sought Yeats out on subsequent visits to Dublin, taking the opportunity to view the painter’s latest work. He was much taken with this Sligo painting on seeing it in 1936, and purchased it in instalments directly from the artist. A simple, wistful scene, it is enlivened by the interaction between the horse and a tiny cat at its feet.
