InscriptionPaddy Whack belonged to Major Newberry, painted by Thos Robinson
Label TextThe inscription in the lower right of the picture indicates that the horse belonged to a Major Newberry. It is not known where Newberry’s residence was located, but it is likely to have been in either Co. Down or Co. Antrim, where Robinson lived and worked. Curiously, the inscription, which may have been added later, names the horse, but merely implies the identity of the young man holding the animal's reins. However, his fashionable dress suggests strongly that he is Major Newberry himself, and also allows us to date the picture quite precisely.
