Label TextAnne O'Neill was one of the five daughters of Sir Neil O'Neill (c.1658-1690) and his wife Frances, daughter of Sir Caryll, 3rd Viscount Molyneux. Her father, a senior officer in the army of James II, died from wounds inflicted at the Battle of the Boyne. Anne was married to John Segrave of Cabragh. One of her younger sisters, Rose, is shown in a pendant portrait (NGI.4149). These portraits feature many of Morphy’s distinct technical mannerisms. The hair, for example, is loosely painted, but the features and costume details are clearly delineated.
