Label TextLike its pendant, A View of Dublin from Chapelizod, this picture is atmospheric, but also topographically accurate. It provides the viewer with a panoramic aspect southwards across Dublin Bay from the high ground above Clontarf. Visible on the South Wall in the bay are the old Poolbeg lighthouse (completed by January 1785) and the Pidgeon House, and in the centre of the composition the Charter School. Discernible on the far side of the bay, meanwhile, is the bell-tower of St Matthew’s Church, Irishtown, just a short distance from where Ashford lived for many years.
