Exhibition HistoryShades of Grey: Painting without Colour, National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin, 22 June - 29 September 2013Label TextIn this painting, as in NGI 4007, Lowry has shown great skill in creating the illusion of a black and white mezzotint pinned to a wooden board. The illusionism is compounded by the inclusion of a key hanging from a nail above the print. The image on the print is most-probably a self-portrait, as the artist's family name is written below it. Although born in England, Lowry spent a great deal of time in Ireland, working chiefly in the east of the country.
