Label TextTwo men are conversing while smoking, drinking and eating. In front of them lies an elaborate still life consisting of, among others, a pipe, a napkin, a pewter jug, a bread roll, a paper used to carry tobacco, a brazier with hot coals, a plate with fish and earthenware jugs. Active in Rotterdam, Sorgh probably trained with David Teniers, a Flemish painter known for his peasant scenes. Sorgh’s oeuvre consists of similar works as well as market scenes. Aside from being an artist, he earned a living as a market bargeman.
