Label TextAnna was the daughter of the burgomaster of The Hague, but moved to Leiden with her husband Johan Hulshout, a wine merchant. A companion portrait of her husband is now at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The paintings were separated at an auction in 1860. Slingelandt was a genre and portrait painter who worked his entire life in Leiden. He probably trained with Gerrit Dou, the progenitor of the Leiden ‘fine’ painters, whose influence is clearly visible in this charming portrait.
