DescriptionThis print was made after Adam Elsheimer’s The Flight into Egypt (Alte Pinakothek, Munich), one of the most enchanting nocturnal landscapes in Western European art and the first ever recording of the Milky Way in paint. The Dutch artist Goudt, Elsheimer’s pupil, engraved The Flight into Egypt in 1613, after Elsheimer had died and his widow had probably sold the painting to Goudt. The print became highly influential for painters in Holland and Flanders, including Peter Paul Rubens and Rembrandt, both of whom were inspired by it.
