DescriptionThe studio was not always a sanctuary of creativity for an artist. It could be a loud and busy space, with assistants and potential clients coming and going. This drawing highlights the conventional role that women played in artists’ studios during the eighteenth century. Rather than being the artist, women were often relegated to the role of wife, muse or model. Artists’ wives played a pivotal role in their husband’s success by simultaneously managing the business and the household.(Katie Buckley, Curatorial Fellow - Prints and Drawings, An Artist's Presence, 2025, Print Gallery)
