DescriptionFrom his early career right up to the end of his life, Hone produced a large number of self-portraits. In this example, he pays homage to his wife Mary, who is clearly recognisable as the subject of the profile portrait that rests on the easel behind him. Hone made similar references to her in a number of other works. Here, he points to the picture in the background, and by implication, to its sitter, acknowledging his profession, but simultaneously affording his wife almost equal status in what is, in effect, a double portrait.
