Label TextAlthough no signed paintings by the Antwerp artist Coecke van Aelst have survived, scholars have attributed this triptych and various other paintings to the artist based on similarities with autograph drawings. The central panel depicts Christ on the cross at Golgotha in the presence of the sorrowful Virgin dressed in blue in the bottom left corner. The wings represent the donors of the triptych and their children kneeling down in prayer. Coecke was married to Mayken Verhulst, a painter of miniatures. Their daughter Maria married Pieter Bruegel the Elder, who was also one of Coecke’s pupils.
