DescriptionThis portrait depicts Charles Kinnaird Sheridan, his sister-in-law Marcia Maria Sheridan and her infant son. Sheridan was the grandson of the Irish playwright, Richard Brinsley Sheridan. A member of the Diplomatic service, he died from tuberculosis in the British Embassy in Paris in 1847, aged thirty.

In this portrait Sheridan sits in an invalid’s chair wearing a robe and slippers. The painting is sketchy in execution and melancholy in mood. Landseer did not manage to complete it by the time Sheridan died.
