Label TextRoman Governor Pontius Pilate admitted that there were no grounds to crucify Christ. However, he followed the wishes of the crowd, and ordered that Christ be flogged first. In depictions of this scene, Christ is generally shown tied to a column, in a large hall, surrounded by soldiers. One figure is about to strike him with a flail while a soldier in chain mail, carrying a red shield, looks up menacingly. Although not directly copied from Bosch, this anonymous artist has taken his inspiration from him.
