DescriptionErnestProcter was an English artist, based in Newlyn, Cornwall. In the years following the First World War he often painted scenes of popular recreation. Here, he shows a fairground attraction known as a 'Devil’s Disc'. The participants balance on a rotating platform before tumbling upon one another in a dizzy heap. Procter shows men and women enjoying the fun, while the central couple uses the opportunity for a furtive embrace. In the background, a child peeks over the barrier to watch the spectacle.
